Intensifiers with Adjectives

Lesson: WATCH OUT!

We can use an intensifier before an adjective to make its meaning stronger. Use a range of intensifiers to make your writing more interesting. However, you must choose the right intensifier based on whether the adjective is gradable or non-gradable.

Gradable Adjectives

Adjectives that can have different levels of intensity (e.g., cold, loud, good).

Use these intensifiers:

  • very
  • extremely
  • super
  • hugely
  • highly
  • incredibly

Example: The sound effects were extremely loud.

Non-gradable Adjectives

Adjectives that express extreme or absolute qualities (e.g., freezing, fascinating, perfect).

Use these intensifiers:

  • absolutely
  • completely
  • totally
  • utterly

Example: The exhibition was absolutely fascinating.

Used with BOTH Types

The following intensifiers can be used with both gradable and non-gradable adjectives:

  • pretty
  • really
  • seriously
